Kathmandu, Dec 6
President Bidya Devi Bhandari returned home today after participating in the 24th conference of the state parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) held in Katowice of Poland.
Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli welcomed President Bhandari at the VVIP bay of the Tribhuvan International Airport upon her arrival. The Deputy Prime Minister, the government ministers, high government officials and chiefs of security bodies were among those present at the VVIP bay to receive the Head-of-the-State.
A contingent of the Nepalese Army presented a 21-gun salute to the President on the occasion.
The President made a special address to the inaugural session of the COP24 which commenced on December 2 and conclude on December 14.
At a news conference organized at the airport, Minister for Forests and Environment Shankti Bahadur Basnet, who was in the President’s entourage, shared about the major points the Head-of-the-State brought to the world’s attention in the climate change conference.
According to him, in the conference’s inaugural session the President viewed that although Nepal has made a big contribution to controlling global temperature, the Nepali were paying the penalty for the wrong they had never done.
She stated that Nepal is a least developed country comprising the mountains, hills and the Tarai flatland. It is suffering from the adverse impact of climate change. Although it is a low-carbon emitting country, it is suffering from the problem of melting glaciers, the snow-capped Himalayas were turning rocky and devoid of snow cover and the possibility of glacier melting has increased.
Nepal will continue to promote renewable energy and electric mobility. The Government of Nepal plans to develop and implement model project on climate change as well as design and implement adaptation and mitigation action plans, the President mentioned in her statement in the inaugural session.
In course of her visit, President Bhandari and the president of the United Nations General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa held courtesy meeting. Similarly, the President had bilateral talks with her Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda, according to Minister Basnet.
She also observed the Royal Castle and the Culture and Science Tower in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. President Bhandari attended the programme organized in her honour by the Non- Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Poland and the Nepal’s Embassy.
